Battle of the Grebbeberg

The Battle of the Grebbeberg unfolded over three days from May 11–13, 1940. The photographs featured here were captured on and around this historic battlefield, while Outposts (voorpostenlijn) have vanished with time, visitors today can still discover remarkably well-preserved bunkers from the frontline (frontlijn). Patient exploration reveals additional remnants of this defensive network—foxholes and earthwork fortifications that bear silent witness to the fierce fighting that took place here.

The photograph below shows a reconstruction of the trench system. More photos of the Grebe Line can be found here.

Frederick V of the Palatinate established his hunting grounds at the top of the Grebbeberg, hosting grand hunting feasts on a spot known as the King’s Table.

For those interested in learning more about the Battle of Grebbeberg, I highly recommend “Stoplijn Grebbeberg” co-written by my friend Rob Janssen. Even if you don’t read Dutch—as I don’t—the book is filled with exceptional photographs and excellent maps.
